Background and History

Silobreaker is a UK-based company, founded in 2005, and with offices in London and Stockholm.

The Name

The name “Silobreaker” comes from the founders’ idea of wanting to break from the traditional (and often political) “silos” of information that still exist inside and outside many organisations and throughout media and information industries. Silobreaker’s aim is to demonstrate the benefits and strengths of a single user platform that facilitates aggregation, analysis and sharing of online information of different types and sources and make it accessible for everyone.

The Technology

The technology behind Silobreaker has been developed and built from the ground up and is the extension of a thesis written by two of the founders while at university finishing their degrees in Computer Science. The technology IP has been gradually developed since 2002 and had its first commercial application in 2005.

The Service

Silobreaker, the online service, was activated in 2006 to test the viability of applying the technology and its distinct approach to a specific segment of the open online news flow. This release was created to see how it would perform compared with both the free news search engines as well as the more costly news aggregation services. The user reaction was extremely positive and the demand for this type of service was confirmed. The initial trial also provided great insight into user behaviour, the need for simplicity, how essential both depth and width of content was, and perhaps most importantly how great the opportunity was to develop a completely new type of offering within search and aggregation.
